Fitful Slumber until 5 A.M. (2015)

Con la emergencia de ‘4:30:00 – 4:36:55 / Vision 5. Ezel’, la gente de VESPERO explora las facetas más relajantes de su rica visión musical. Con un esquema rítmico en 7/8 de tenor jazz-rockero y una sonoridad global abundantemente signada por la fusión moderna con raíces étnicas, las armonías de la guitarra y las flotantes líneas de la mandolina se centran en animar los bloques sonoros con un aura de ensueño amable. Eso sí, cuando llega el momento de aportar un dinamismo rockero al asunto, el grupo no se pone tímido al respecto: alrededor de la frontera del quinto minuto comienza un fantástico solo de guitarra que hubiera llenado de orgullo al mismísimo Steve Hillage. ‘4:36:56 – 4:51:14 / Vision 6. Atil’, con sus 14 ¼ minutos de duración, resulta la visión más extensa del álbum. A poco de pasada la frontera del noveno minuto y medio, la pieza vira hacia un pasaje de talante meditabundo en 9/8 donde entra a tallar el cello de Belov como ítem protagónico del bloque global; poco después, la guitarra y el saxo de Alekseev entran en acción sobre el impulso generado por las percusiones adicionales que completan los huecos estratégicos del groove creado por la batería. Cerrando el repertorio del álbum, ‘4:51:15 – 5:00:00 / Vision 7. Kidish Hail’ aplica otro ejercicio de musicalidad exquisita sobre un juego de compases sofisticados, y siempre con la mandolina destacada en buena parte del desarrollo temático. No tan meditabundo como ‘Vision 5’ y conservando nexos estilísticos con ‘Vision 3’, esta pieza de cierre nos remite en varios momentos a las añoranzas del GONG de la Trilogía del “Flying Teapot”: la presencia del saxofonista Alekseev (nuevamente) refuerza esta evocación, aunque también se hacen notar aires de familia con figuras señoriales del space-rock actual como son HIDRIA SPACEFOLK y QUANTUM FANTAY.

VESPERO se confirma sólidamente con “Fitful Slumber At 5 A.M.” como la voz más autorizada del rock progresivo psicodélico ruso ante el gran escenario mundial del rock experimental. ¡Disco altamente recomendado!

Mittlerweile sind sie schon fast Ikonen des scheuklappenfreien Psychedelic Rock (die Bezeichnung ist eigentlich viel zu restriktiv), die Russen VESPERO, zumal mit ihrem nunmehr sechsten Album abermals neue Töne zu Gehör gebracht werden: “Fitful Slumber Until 5 A.M.” hat etwas von einem Soundtrack zu raumgreifenden Filmen, die vorwiegend bei Nacht spielen und dabei bunter ausfallen, als es modernste Bildschirme wiedergeben können.

Tatsächlich handelt es sich bei der Platte um ein Konzeptwerk, aber das ist egal, denn die Musik klingt so oder so stark assoziativ und steht für sich. Die Fülle an Ideen, die VESPERO und insbesondere Alexey Klabuko an den Tasten verbraten, ist atemberaubend und pinkelt immer noch über so ziemlich alles, was beispielsweise beim Roadburn-Festival dilettieren darf, nur weil es mit einer Gitarren Drones erzeugen kann. Hier geht es virtuos zu wie bei SOFT MACHINE zu besten Zeiten oder bei OZRIC TENTACLES in ihrer besonders energetischen Frühphase. Nicht vergessen darf man die verhalten folkloristischen Töne aus der Heimat der Band (schon ab der vierten Minute im ausschweifenden Opener) und das atemberaubende Percussion-Spiel während “Vision 3”, die stolpernde Rhythmik bei gleichzeitiger Wahrung des programmatischen Space-Rock-Pulses und den melodischen Schmelz, den andere Genre-Bands bei allem Genudel viel zu oft vergessen (“Vision 5”!).

Am Ende kann man sich diesen wahnwitzigen und doch nie hektischen Trip immer wieder geben, also habenVESPERO nichts weniger getan als ihre (Weltraum-)Mission einmal mehr erfolgreich ausgeführt.

FAZIT: “Fitful Slumber Until 5 A.M.” vertont vortrefflich genau das, was der Titel verspricht. Wenn man sich nachts herumwälzt und die Gedanken schweifen lässt, hört sich das in Musik umgesetzt wohl so an wie dieses Meisterwerk. Besser wird es in diesem Bereich 2015 nicht mehr. Wo bleibt der Durchbruch auf breiter Szene-Ebene und am besten noch darüber hinaus?

Vespero werd in 2003 in Astrakhan, zuid Rusland opgericht en brengt sinds 2004 muziek uit, zowel in eigen beheer, als via maatschappijen.
De band onderging sinds hun oprichting diverse keren bezettingswisselingen en bestaat uit: Ivan Fedotov – drums en percussie, Arkady Fedotov – basgitaar, synthesizer, fluit en achtergrond zang, Alexander Kuzolev – gitaar, effecten en elektonica en Alexei Klabukov – arpeggiator, keyboards en mellotron.
Nadat Vladimir Belov – cello, Vespero had bijgestaan op de CD “Droga”, speelde hij ook live met de band mee.
De opnamen die daarvan zijn gemaakt, zijn na de plotselinge dood van Vladimir op 7 juni 2014, als download verkrijgbaar onder de naam “Cello Liventures (In Memory Of Vladimir Belov)”, waarbij de totale opbrengst van het album naar de familie Belov gaat.
Vladimr is ook nog in een nummer te horen op het nieuwe album van Vespero, dat “Fitful Slumber Until 5 A.M.” heet, waarop verder Alexey Esin – dwarsfluit en zhaleyka, Pavel Alekseev – tenor saxofoon en Alexander Taranenko – accordeon als gastmuzikanten mee spelen.

“Fitful Slumber Until 5 A.M.” bevat 7 nummers,waarvan “Vision 1. Ogni Fuoco” de eerste is en in dit nummer laat de band me meteen genieten van een schitterend swingend stukje progressieve rock, waarin ook jazz, spacerock en oosterse invloeden in te horen zijn, dat in een vrij hoog tempo gespeeld wordt en enkele uitstekende tempowisselingen bevat.
Daarna hoor ik “Vision 2. Outer Planting” en hierin schotelt de band me een licht hypnotiserend progressief rock nummer voor, waarin symfonische, oosterse en krautrock invloeden in zitten, die in een swingend ritme gespeeld worden.
Dan krijg ik “Vision 3. Kamzas Red Sands” te horen, een lekker in het gehoor klinkend swingend rock nummer, dat in een hoog tempo begonnen wordt, maar halverwege neemt de band even gas terug, om vervolgens weer in een iets sneller tempo verder te gaan.
In “Vision 4. 1507” speelt Vespero een geweldig stukje symfonische progressieve muziek, dat spacerock invloeden heeft en enkele prima tempowisselingen bevat, waarna ik “Vison 5. Ezel” te horen krijg en ook hierin laat de band me genieten van een heerlijk swingend stukje symfonische rock, waarbij het onmogelijk is stil te blijven zitten.
Vervolgens hoor ik “Vision 6. Atil”, waarin de band verder gaat met het maken van hun fantastische progressieve rock met spacerock en symfonische invloeden, die in een zeer dansbaar ritme gespeeld wordt, maar halverwege verandert in een rustig stuk muziek, waarin jazz invloeden in verwerkt zitten en na een subtiele tempowisseling gaat de band hiermee verder in een iets hoger tempo en wordt het geheel weer progressiever.
Het laatste nummer heet “Vision 7. Kidish Hail” en ook daarin schotelt Vespero me een schitterend stukje symfonische progressieve rock voor, dat in een vrij hoog tempo gespeeld wordt en na een tempowisseling verandert in een licht psychedelisch nummer met jazz invloeden.

De Russische band Vespero heeft me met “Fitful Slumber Until 5 A.M.” opnieuw bewezen een band van top klasse te zijn, door weer een fantastische CD te maken en ik kan elke liefhebber van dit genre, dit geweldige album dan ook aanraden. 6 albums deep into their career, Russian outfit Vespero have crafted a vast catalog of diverse sounding music that has put them head and shoulders above the rest of their contemporaries. Their music, which incorporates many different styles that are all gently interwoven, is primarily characterized by a multi-layered approach, free of any time constraints, that slowly unfolds until a finished patchwork of recognizable beauty is revealed. With each new release, the band has peeled back another layer and given the listener a completely refreshing and different listening experience.

Their latest offering through RAIG entitled Fitful Slumber Until 5 A.M. is in their words wrapped around the concept and “theme of intricate functions of the human subconscious, dream visions and music.” Each track can be interpreted as a standalone dream or vision and yet it is all so expertly crafted in a way that almost suggests that individual titles don’t really apply, because it all feels like one long form, flowing, multi-faceted composition. This feeling isn’t new, it’s what you get each time you initiate the Vespero listening experience, and their new album is no exception.

Armed with a lineup featuring Arkady ‘Ark’ Fedotov (bass, synths, flutes, voice), Ivan Fedotov (drums, percussions), Alexei Klabukov (synths, keyboards, accordion), and Alexander Kuzovlev (guitars, electronics), this seventy minute epic finds the band continuing to blend their prog/ jazz/ psych rock template and adding subtle elements of folk and ethnic music to the mix. The musicianship is once again stellar and the arrangements are elaborate and superbly crafted. The unique brand of music that Vespero creates is constructed in such a way, that all it really asks of the listener is that they find a time and space to listen to the music from beginning to end. If received in this manner, it just makes the rewards that much more plentiful.

Fitful Slumber Until 5 A.M. is yet another masterpiece in the Vespero catalog. If you haven’t yet had the pleasure of discovering their music, I strongly recommend you seek out this one or any of their other releases. You will not be disappointed.

Vespero continue to evolve, and on their latest album, Fitful Slumber until 5A.M., they serve up one of their most compositionally and instrumentally sophisticated and exciting sets to date. The band describe the album as a “conceptual piece touching upon the theme of intricate functions of the human subconscious, dream-visions and music”.

The “intricate” and “dream-visions” descriptors certainly resonated with me throughout the set. Vespero are deep into complex Prog territory on this album, while incorporating all manner of Jazz, ethnic and Space Rock influences.

Vision 1: Ogni Fuoco consists of high energy Prog-Jazz-Space Rock. The bass and flute provide the jazzy feel, with an almost bouzouki sounding instrument injecting the ethnic vibe, and rocket propelled synths taking it all into space. The music is clearly composed and very tightly executed, but Vespero manage to maintain a loose knit feel, even drifting off into mellow soundscape segments. After that opening roller coaster ride we’ve got Vision 2: Outer Planting, which alternates between an Ambient-Prog take on traditional ethnic party music and dreamy deep space interludes, with excellent use of mandolin and a sci-fi ooo-wee-ooo keyboard melody. Vision 3: Kamzas Red Sands could be the cool grooving Space-Prog soundtrack to a sci-fi secret agent flick. Vision 4: 1507 mixes Dashes of Discipline-era King Crimson with the Jazz, ethnic and Space Rock influences that pervade throughout the album into a steadily and heavily rocking and rolling sprint to the finish line. Vision 5: Ezel blends bouncy jazzy ethnic Prog with dreamy soundscape excursions and blistering Space Rock. I like the whirling dervish ethnic vibe of Vision 6: Atil and its explosive heavy rocking spaced out Prog-Jazz that at times brings to mind a cosmically ethnic inflected Soft Machine. And Vision 7: Kidish Hail is a darkly reflective, oddly dissonant Space-Ambient-Jazz rocker that closes the set.

I’ve been an impressed follower of Vespero since their launch and have to say this is hands down their best album to date. The musicianship and compositional acrobatics are mind-blowing, but maintain a relaxed freeform feel so as to dispense with any overly flashy pretentions. This is complex Prog that rocks hard and takes chances. Fitful Slumber until 5A.M. will be a shoe-in for my Best of 2015 list. No shit, RECOMMENDED!

With this album Russian jammers Vespero have chosen a direction that incorporates more prominently the element of folk or world instrumentation. Guitarist Alexander Kuzovlev has introduced more traditional instruments (mostly mandolin) into lead or foundational roles in virtually every song. Keyboard wizard Alexey Klabukov has chosen either edgy-weird space/computer sounds or retro/70s sounds to be featured in his palette here. Drummer Ivan Fedotov has been asked to perform more straightforward role as rhythm keeper instead of the adventurous free-flowing improvisateur I fell in love with on By the Waters of Tomorrow. As a matter of fact, this 2010 release had me so excited exactly because this drummer and group were so free-form and adventurous–like the Krautrock bands of old. I fear that the band as a whole has reined in and contained their sound considerably since those formative days of the Naughties. It feels to me as if only bass player Arkady Fedotov has been able to really keep his groove on from the days of “old.”

Don’t get me wrong: There are good songs here–songs that I like to hear once in a while (though, I have to admit, there is not a single song that I love the whole way through)–but nothing that sucks me in and hypnotizes me the way By the Waters of Tomorrow and the “Liventure” series did.

Favorite songs: “Vision 2: Outer Planting (4:02:16 – 4:10:30)” (8:15) (9/10); “Vision 5: Ezel (4:30:00 – 4:36:55)” (6:56) (8/10); “Vision 1: Ogni Fuoco (3:50:18 – 4:02:15)” (11:53) (8/10), and; the Arabian feeling “Vision 6: Atil (4:36:46 – 4:51:14)” (14:18) (8/10).

A well-performed set of songs that are, unfortunately, a little disappointing to me. It is hard to discern this album’s value as it is not, in my opinion, “an excellent addition to any prog rock music collection” nor is it merely “Good.” It is a 3.5 star album that I am going to rate down for failing to live up to both my expectations and the band’s potential.

Unruhiger Schlummer bis fünf Uhr morgens? Offensichtlich beschäftigt sich das sechste Studioalbum von Vespero mit dem Schlaf, oder dem, was so alles im Hirn eines Schlafenden passiert. Jedem der sieben Stücke von “Fitful Slumber until 5 A.M.” ist eine Zeitperiode am frühen Morgen zugeordnet, die auch genau der Spielzeit entspricht (Track 1 “dauert” z.B. von 3:50:18 bis 4:02:15). Was wir hier also hören ist das, oder eine musikalische Umsetzung dessen, was der Protagonist (wer er auch immer sein mag) zwischen 3:50 und 5:00 erlebt, vielleicht was er träumt, worüber er nachdenkt. Oder wir sehen (hören) ihm zu, wie er sich nervös herumwälzt, und sich irgendwelchen Traum-Wach-Fantasien bzw. Gedanken hingibt. Offensichtlich ist er jedenfalls nicht entspannt und ruhig am schlummern.

Gesang und Texte gibt es – wie meist bei Vespero – keine, so dass man auch das Konzept ignorierend einfach nur der Musik lauschen kann. Diese bewegt sich weitestgehend in denselben Bahnen wie die auf den Vorgängeralben, gibt es eine moderne Variante des Spacerocks zu hören, die bisweilen in Postrockgefilde gerät. Das retroprogressive Element, auch die einstmals vorhandenen krautigen Einflüsse (siehe “Subkraut: U-Boats Willkommen Hier“), wurden allerdings weitestgehend entfernt. Dafür sind verstärkt folkige Ingredienzien vorhanden. Dieselben werden nicht nur durch die Gastmusiker an Akkordeon, Zhaleyka (eine russische Rohrblatthornpfeife) und Flöte beigesteuert, sondern auch und vor allem durch Alexander Kuzovlevs Mandolinenspiel.

Die kantigen, hackbrettartigen Einwürfe Kuzovlevs geben den sich sonst in eher typischen Spacrockgefilden bewegenden Klängen (jaulende-schwebende E-Gitarren, allerlei füllende Tastentarbeit, fiepend-zischende Elektronikeinlagen, ein munter tanzender Bass und das treibende Schlagzeug) ein sehr charakteristisches Gepräge. Etwas irdischer geben sich Vespero hier also, erinnern zumindest dann, wenn sich das Sax echohallend in den Vordergrund arbeitet an Gong, erzeugen ansonsten aber eine sehr eigene folkig-dynamische Version des modernen Spaceprogs. Dem Konzept entsprechend kommt die Musik oft etwas nervös und unruhig daher, wogen und wuseln die Klänge treibend und vielschichtig dahin, immer wieder allerdings unterbrochen von ruhigeren, klangschwebenden Inseln. Mitunter, wenn z.B. in “Atil” elektrifiziertes Cello (gespielt vom leider im Sommer 2014 unerwartet verstorbenen Vladimir Below) und Mellotronartiges aufeinander treffen, bekommt die Musik dann doch einen leicht retroprogressiv-crimsoiden Anstrich.

“Fitful Slumber until 5 A.M.” bietet sehr abwechslungsreichen Instrumentalprog, der klassische Spacerockschemen, postrockige Hypnotik, einen Schuss Retroprogressives, etwas Jazz und einiges an Folk zu einem dichten Ganzen vermengt. Ein vielschichtiger Trip zwischen Wirklichkeit, Traum und Wahnsinn kommt hier aus den Boxen, der aber nie allzu hektisch oder wüst ausgefallen ist. Wer Spaciges mit leichtem Retrocharme und Postrockeinschlag schätzt und nichts gegen folkige Verunreinigungen einzuwenden hat, der sollte “Fitful Slumber until 5 A.M.” dringend antesten!
